点评:I have rated my visit as 'excellent' because (thanks to the member of staff whom I met at the outset and who was so helpful and co-operative when it came to looking to tailor my visit to meet what I had in mind for it ) in the three hours I spent in looking around a key area of the original mill, and in reading and listening to all the support material, and trying out the 'hands on' experiences, I gained everything from my three hours there which I had hoped to gain.
I am probably not a typical 'customer', as I was looking at this mill visit with a view to assessing its suitability for school visits and, if so, for what age groups, and for what reasons.
For a teacher willing to undertake the required preparation, and to pitch what they do there at the level which the pupils in their charge that day require, I myself would have been very happy (I am a retired former teacher and teacher trainer) to take along pupils between the ages of, say, 11 years and 18 years.
As an adult, I know I would be happy to take along there anyone I know aged 11 or over, PROVIDED THAT I thought they would manage to demonstrate an interest in what is on offer, and be willing to dispense with their phone and engage with their surroundings and not spend the whole time wondering where the nearest cafe is.
Anyone with an interest in industrial history, in social history, in humans' inventiveness, and in the changing attitudes over the years on the part of factory owners and managers to what sort of working conditions their employees (including young children) could reasonably expect to 'enjoy' will learn a lot from what is on offer here.
The potential of the place excited me. If were still a teacher whose remit included covering the 18th and 19th centuries in the UK, and if I lived in comfortable reach of the place, I would certainly be heading there with my charges, but having made sure to do my own 'homework' first, including visiting the place in advance on my own.
The resulting 'package' could be used year after year, to very good effect.
