West side Taman Negara - Sungai Relau accessed via Merapoh

点评：This review is not for the Kuala Tahan entry point for Taman Negara, but for entry via Merapoh to the western side of Taman Negara at the Sungai Relau entry point. This is accessed via Merapoh on the north-south railway and highway.
I came here for the Tree Top Walk and to experience some time on trails in the lowland tropical rainforest. For forest walks it is required to have a guide, but even if you are travelling solo and this is expensive, there is much to learn from local people's knowledge of plants and animal life, even if just for one well-planned day. I had excellent experiences through guides Nizam and Naza. Wildlife is very hard to spot but I did see a Prevosts squirrel, macaques, a garnet pitta and distant hornbills. Night-spotting I only saw (impressive) spiders. With Nizam I travelled, standing on the back of his HiLux, for 14km in to Kuala Juram where Gunung Tahan climbers begin their trek. The river junction here, with crystal clear water and overhanging ngeram trees, is the perfect picture of pure wilderness. Exquisite. The Tree Top Walk is open only from 9am to 4pm. To be up there at dawn or at dusk would be rich in sounds and bird activity. Still, during the day there are wonderful views into a canopy of climbers and epiphytes and strangling figs and countless different tree species. It's about a kilometre around this amazing structure and a remarkable bird's eye view! Talking to a guide on your arrival will help you plan days/nights with the guide, or on your own. I came on the train and Nizam drove me the 7km from Merapoh in to the Perhilitan office and my campsite, and overall he made my visit very worthwhile and not too expensive. So I do recommend the Sungai Relau side of Taman Negara. There's no shop there, though, so if you are camping a few nights (I was there for four) you need to bring all your food with you, tent, camp stove etc.. Oh and you'll enjoy hearing the Quarter-Past-Seven cicada each evening!
