So long, and thanks for all the fish
Mauritius Sea Discovery的点评
点评:We had a great private trip one morning as a family and the twin-engined boat was really comfortable and quick, and felt very secure. The two crew looked after us very well. A really first class service.
As in 2019 when we last did a similar trip with a different outfit, the number of boats and tourists chasing marine mammals makes for a pretty hair-raising experience. You can easily have 10+ boats on the dolphins and almost as many at any one time on the whales. I’m sure people who do this every day know what they’re doing, but to us it appears close to a free-for-all, and I would say there’s a not insignificant risk of accident from people in the water being hit by another chasing boat. The boats rush to be the first on site when the dolphins/whales next surface, dropping those that want to get in right in the projected path of the dolphins/whales. So all the boats converge and there can be many people scattered in the water, of varied swimming ability. Some snorkellers go under for quite a long time and can pop up unexpectedly. It will not take much of an error for an accident to occur given the number of boats and people involved.
Our team were very safe and the skipper always tried to shield us in the water with our boat and the crew got in to guide us. Our team also maintained a sensible distance from the whales, in particular, and advised against swimming with the humpback mothers and calves as apparently the mothers don’t feed at this time so need to conserve energy/definitely don’t want to be stressed out. Not all other boats are so safety conscious or respectful of the whales/dolphins.
In any case, the dolphins try their hardest to avoid people so you’ll only get fleeting glimpses. It’s not The Big Blue. The whales mostly seemed to carry on their journey without changing direction or minding, but we saw a humpback mother lashing out at snorkellers who had got too close with tail swipes - they clearly don’t like being pursued relentlessly either.
This is an amazing wildlife resource arguably being poorly managed as a tourist experience.
