It’s about a 70-minute return walk from the First Basin at Cataract Gorge, or roughly a 9-minute drive. There’s ample parking available, though be prepared for a set of steep stairs leading down to the suspension bridge, which you’ll cross to reach the site.
Completed in 1895, this was Australia’s first public hydroelectric power station. Today, it operates as a free interpretive centre, with informative displays detailing its history and operation. The station ran for around 60 years until 1955, using water from the South Esk River via an 850-metre tunnel and powered by Siemens turbines. After being destroyed in a major flood in 1929, it was later rebuilt.
The combination of history, engineering, and natural surroundings makes this a rewarding stop. The suspension bridge adds a bit of adventure, and the views along the river are well worth the effort.
