点评:Together with the ferris wheel and jetty, the Pioneer Memorial is one of Glenelg’s very distinctive landmarks.
This towering marble memorial is located in Moseley Square, near the beach and commemorates the arrival of the first pioneer settlers in 1836 on the HMS Buffalo.
Unlike the other states, South Australia was founded entirely by free colonists, not convicts.
Some came from Germany but mostly they came from Britain, escaping poor living conditions and seeking a better life. Skilled workers were encouraged to go. In order to get a workable combination of labourers, tradesmen and artisans, those with practical skills were offered free passage.
By the end of 1836, 19 ships had arrived or were on their way to South Australia and the population was 839. A further 78 ships arrived the following year, and another 172 ships the year after that. By 1838, the population had grown by more than 7 times. The new colony was well under way.
The Pioneer Memorial stands nearly 13 metres tall. If you crane your neck, you can see a bronze model of the HMS Buffalo at the very top.
A central panel on the western side (facing the sea) has a stylised relief that depicts the proclamation ceremony. George Stevenson, Secretary to Governor Hindmarsh, stands in front of a crowd to proclaim South Australia as a colony. The Governor stands at his side (we could pick him out by his hat) and at the forefront, a group of men unfurl a flag and prepare it for hoisting. There are some women with parasols in the crowd, and interestingly a keg on the right hand corner. Perhaps they were planning a big celebration afterwards?
Others panels depict people who made significant contributions to the development of South Australia. On the sides, bronze plaques list the names of the first explorers (Nuyts, Flinders, Baudin, Sturt, Barker, and Light) and the names of the founders including Edward Gibbons Wakefield, Robert Gouger, RobertTorrens, and George Fife Angus.
The portraits at the top are of Wakefield, Hindmarsh, Gouger and Angas.
