点评:If you want an absolute Maori experience, then this is your go-to!
My mum and I joined the Te Urunga-Tu - Sunrise Tour on the 6th of March. We were very fortunate to have a private tour, as we were the only visitors booked for that morning. At 4:55am we were picked up from our AirBnB in Ruatoria by our guide Monty in his 4WD. Even though it was very early in the morning, Monty greeted us with a big smile. He welcomed us in Maori and from that moment, the story of Maunga Hikurangi by Monty began...
For the second part of this unforgettable journey, we exchanged the 4WD for the "trusty steed, the 6 seater Can Am HD8 Defender" for a 40-minute drive to the Maui Whakairo (carvings). Farming activities take place on the mountain, so cows and sheep were sometimes running in front of the steed, which created hilarious moments.
On site, Monty performed a karakia (prayer) and mihi (welcome). We then had free time to enjoy the sunrise, each in our own way. Together with Monty, I climbed up a bit the mountain from where there is this breathtaking overview and where he was happy to assist me with taking photos.
After watching the sunrise, we choose the full Monty version about the nine large pou (sculptures) that make up the Te Takapau a Maui. Information about the local Ngati Porou tribal history and culture was shared, as well as stories of their ancestor Maui-Tikiti-a-Taranga were explained.
After the tour around the carvings, Monty drove us a little down the mountain to set up a wind-free, light breakfast for us. We then made our way back further down the mountain to Ruatoria, where we were being dropped off at our AirBnB and said goodbye to each other in a traditional Maori way.
Overall, there is heaps of time to take photographs, to ask questions or to just enjoy and be in the moment. The communication is great before, during and even after the experience - we received a booklet/summary with beautiful pictures by email of the stories shared that morning. A nice bonus to the whole experience.
Monty is a true storyteller and has a great sense of humor, and we are very grateful to have met him.
Bedankt (thank you), Wilhelmina and Stephanie from the Netherlands.
