点评:In early December 2025, my husband and I took the tour up Maunga Hikurangi, and it was a highlight of our four-week trip to New Zealand. Our tour guide was the brilliant, knowledgeable, and personable Monty Manuel and he was so generous to spend about six hours with us that day.
We learned about the Ngati Porou iwi (tribe) including their legends, attachment to the land, current governance, and traditions. We loved hearing about Monty’s way of life in Ruatoria, family traditions, and some background/economics of Ruatoria and the East Coast region.
Riding with Monty in a six-seater 4WD 4x4 of- road vehicle, we went 2/3s up the mountain to the nine carved pou or sculptures that make up the Te Takapau a Maui (Maui Whakairo). There we learned about stories of Maui, a founding ancestor of both Aotearoa and the Ngati Porou iwi.
Since this adventure, I’ve tried to continue to learn about the Te Reo language and about history, legends and traditions of the Māori people and culture, no matter how difficult it is to get my head around the sounds of this unfamiliar language. I so wish we had more time on New Zealand’s East Coast.
Note – we drove about two hours up from Gisborne that morning and it was a beautiful drive. Three years ago, the area got hit hard by Cyclone Gabrielle. While some road construction is still going on, it’s quite easy drive to Ruatoria and I strongly recommend this tour.
