If you take a car over just get your car rental company to organise it for you. You can look up crossing times online, but it goes backwards and forwards every couple of hours for most of the day during the week but only two trips on Sunday.
If you don’t have a car you can just turn up and pay $10 WST but if you’re taking a car you MUST book in advance and turn up an hour before it departs - if you’re even slightly tardy they’ll give your spot to someone else. The ticket is only for the car and driver so be prepared to pay another $10WST pp when you get there.
They pack you in tightly - just watch the guy giving you directions and he'll steer you into the spot.
If you have anyone that gets motion sickness maybe get them some meds - it gets pretty rocky and rolly.
It gets very hot in the car (no engines/air con allowed) - recommend taking a towel or sarong to hang over the window to block the sun, fan, cold drinks, and something to do/read for the journey. You can purchase coffee or ice cream on the boat.
