Go Sail ASA certification cruise was one of the best experiences of my life

点评：My wife and I attended a week long course provided by Go Sail Vacations in the US Virgin Islands for ASA 101, 103, 104, and 114 certifications aboard a beautiful 47 foot Fountaine Pajot cruising catamaran. The short story is that this was one of the best experiences of my life. It isn’t just a way to learn to sail. It is also a brilliant way to experience the US Virgin Islands under the wing of locals who knows all the best spots.
We had absolutely no problems with Go Sail Virgin Islands. For both the class and the charter, preparing required extensive communication. We found Go Sail was thorough, clear, and professional.
The boat was spacious and luxurious. With a generator and desalinization, we had air conditioning, and all the ice we wanted for our tropical drinks. The cabins were comfortable with private heads and showers. The boat was generously provisioned. Although we went ashore for many meals and made our own breakfast, the two dinners our captains prepared for us in the fully equipped galley were delicious. We wanted for nothing.
This was serious training with a nearly overwhelming amount of up front work (a lot to remember but nothing very difficult). Each day we had a few hours of class in the morning and several hours of hands-on training under sail through the day. Captains Jalil and Claire were brilliant. They demonstrated tremendous knowledge and ability. They were amazing teachers. I’ve heard of some courses where the captain was unwilling to let the students do too much. Not Jalil and Claire. Each student worked through each skill from each crew position often several times until we got it right. We worked all the systems, checked the oil, operated the engines, checked the water systems, started the generator, dropped the anchor, etc., etc. Yes, we sailed out past three miles and dumped the poop. We did everything. The captains were amazingly patient. Standing by and knowing he could still recover if things got any worse, Jalil would quietly let us screw up. Then he’d offer some quiet friendly advice about what we needed to do differently and made us try again. We all learned so much.
What made the trip so amazing is that we were doing this all in the US Virgin Islands. In some ways the USVIs are a little more down trodden than some other destinations, but they are beautiful, and friendly, with amazing nature and plenty of fun destinations. We didn’t just learn to sail. We SAILED! We rocked through the swells in a fresh breeze traveling among the beautiful islands with a purpose and a destination. We didn’t just learn to sail. We learned how to sail to hidden coves, how to anchor off pristine beaches, and how to moor next to impressive coral reefs where we would snorkel almost every day. We moored next to a swim-up floating taco bar. We learned the right knot to tie our dinghy up at the dock of colorful waterfront restaurants. We had pina coladas delivered in hollowed out pineapples while wading knee deep on a gorgeous beach.
Jalil and Claire weren’t just great teachers, they were also great company. Friendly and funny, they knew the best places and had the best stories both of the more distant history and more recent juicy tidbits of life in the islands. I enjoyed their perspective and I’m grateful they were willing to share their stories with us relative strangers.
Speaking of strangers, I was a little worried about being confined for a week on a boat with four other students. Who knows, right? Well, I was being ridiculous. Our crew was terrific. Maybe a week is too short to really get to know someone, but sharing this experience with our new friends was one of the best parts of the trip. Don’t be afraid. Go meet someone! Most people are pretty cool.
I feel like I’ve visited the USVI more thoroughly than I ever could have staying by ourselves in a hotel. I saw many hidden places. I learned some island lore. I saw some historic ruins. Yes, I bought some tourist junk, but I also heard something of what a couple of locals think about life in the islands. Somewhere in there I learned a lot more about sailing. Honestly, I would recommend this to anyone that likes sailing even a little bit. It doesn’t matter if you really want the certifications. It’s just a great way to experience the islands.

我觉得自己对美属维尔京群岛的了解程度，远超我们独自住在酒店时能做到的程度。我发现了许多不为人知的景点，也了解了一些当地的传说。我还看到了一些历史遗迹。没错，我也买了些旅游纪念品，但更重要的是，我听到了几位当地人对岛上生活的看法。在此过程中，我还学到了很多关于航海的知识。说实话，我真心推荐给任何哪怕只是稍微喜欢一点航海的人。你是否真的想要那些证书其实并不重要。这只是体验这些岛屿的绝佳方式而已。
