点评:We were fortunate to find that there was a free guided tour of the museum just after we arrived. This gave us an excellent introduction to the collections of the museum. Otherwise we might have felt overwhelmed by the sheer wealth of objects and information there. The MOA does not focus solely on the indigenous peoples of the north-west of Canada but that is a major feature and one that we, and presumably most overseas visitors, were particularly interested in. We learned a lot about the life and culture of the First Nations. The artefacts are well labelled. Staff were happy to answer questions. The MOA forms part of the University of British Columbia and it has a reassuringly scholarly feel; we felt that we were seeing the results of serious research, not just a tourist attraction.
Some objects immediately grabbed our attention. The totem poles were magnificent. We had to investigate others to understand their significance. Some pieces of clothing were kept flat in drawers which visitors could open to examine.
The MOA is housed in an imposing modern building. I understand that it was closed for refurbishment quite recently. The result is a particularly magnificent museum.
There are more exhibits outside the building, including a reconstruction of a family house. You cannot go inside, but it is worth looking at from the exterior. The surroundings are very pleasant
There are lockers in which visitors can leave coats and bags. There is a cafe with friendly, engaging staff. Unfortunately they had almost run out of sandwiches by 1pm when we were ready for lunch. We should have gone earlier!
