点评:This museum was so highly recommended, it was a no-brainer to include it in our trip itinerary. We took transit, TransLink 14 bus (adult fare, $3.35), to get to UBC from downtown Vancouver. It was about an hour's bus ride plus 15 mins of walking which we didn't mind. We arrived at the museum's admissions counter at 12:50PM, purchased our tickets (adult, $26), took a photo of the museum map then stepped inside.
We worked our way from the ramp to the massive Great Hall where skylight and floor-to-ceiling windows invite in abundant natural light. Every Pacific Northwest Coast carved artifact was strategically displayed, properly labeled and interpretive text were brief and to the point. We had our fill of impressive totem poles, house posts, massive feast dishes, ladles, lids and more.
Gallery exhibits were interesting and informative. My personal favourite was Bill Reid's The Raven and the First Men. The yellow cedar masterpiece was commissioned specifically for the museum's rotunda space (formerly a WWII gun turret) and took Bill Reid and his assistants a few years to complete.
There was an interactive display where when you wave your hand, directed lights are activated and the antique cedar boards in front of you slowly reveal carvings. Surprised but pleased to learn that some displayed artwork allowed gentle touching from visitors (Bill Reid's Bear sculpture and canoe). We also saw Ellen Neel's totem pole displayed horizontally in one of the rooms--this popular totem pole graced Stanley Park for four decades but, in Sep 2024, was returned to the museum for preservation. Before we left, we went outside to see the reconstructed Haida houses and totem poles displayed behind the museum.
The Museum of Anthropology is a Vancouver must-see. Definitely worth a visit.
