Kootenays Road Trip: The Glass Bottle House

点评：After departing the ferry at Kootenay Bay, we drove to the Glass Bottle House. After 35 years in the funeral business, Mr. David Brown practiced ultimate recycling by collecting 600,000 empty glass bottles that were used to hold embalming fluid to construct this unusual roadside attraction. This venture took ten years of visiting friends and former colleagues to obtain these containers. (As a side note, we learned these bottles are made of plastic now but the present owners have a supply of glass ones to perform repairs). His first build was a home with three main rooms for himself and his family. A well-versed guide gave us a tour of the 1200 square foot abode. We learned that during the winter months, family descendants still occupy the home. The upper floors are private and closed to the public. We were particularly fascinated by a taxidermied peacock called Prince Charles who sits in the living room in all his feathered glory. The kitchen still has operational old-time appliances including a fridge and stove. Next, we self-toured the grounds, enjoying the many winding pathways bordered by colourful flowers of all types. We walked over a bridge, also made of glass bottles and followed the path to the shores of Kootenay Lake. A waterwheel and wishing well are also a part of this wonderful place. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs are inhabitants of another part of the garden. As we continued our walk, we saw a graceful archway, several tower-like structures and many staircases. We found the staff to be extremely knowledgeable, friendly as well as professional.
