点评：Saint Joseph's Oratory of Mount Royal is a prominent
Roman Catholic Basilica known for its stunning
architecture, rich history, great views, and as a major pilgrimage site. It is the largest church in Canada and one of the largest double-shelled domed structures in the world, with the outside dome reaching 318 feet in height from the nave floor. The Dome was modeled to resemble the dome of the Florence Cathedral in Italy.
The Oratory seats 2,400, and is a National Historic Site of Canada, attracting many visitors.
It was raining when we visited, so we were not able to experience the building’s special alignment with the sun. In summer, the setting sun is perfectly aligned with the centerline of the main steps that lead up to and into the basilica. The main aisle inside the basilica, and even the cross on the altar, are also in perfect alignment with the setting sun on the longest day of the year.
Construction of the basilica began in 1914 with the church crypt, and was finished in 1967. Over the roughly 60 years of construction, many architects and engineers were
involved in the building, bringing together many different ideas, resulting in this Impressive Basilica.
