点评:There's no way my husband and I would have seen what we covered and learned what we did about the Burren without Shane Connolly, so I'm really glad we booked a tour with him. We were joined by only one other couple, so it was great to have a small-group experience. I found Shane and his company through Rick Steves's book on Ireland, and he was fantastic. He's a local sheep and cattle farmer with quite the wealth of knowledge at hand, and a performance-level sense of humor. When we met up at "the church" in Ballyvaughan, he asked us what kind of trip we were looking for in terms of scenery and fitness. I said we were up for anything but nothing too strenuous, and he accommodated that. He took the other couple in his car, and we followed them to the Black Head area, parking alongside the road. Shane led us up the hill, with frequent stops to share his encyclopedic knowledge about the Burren and its history and ecology. The scenery was beyond spectacular, and luckily it was a sunny day (with a brief shower). Over the course of three hours, we zigzagged our way up the rocks (which had seemed impossible from the road, but it was fine — the rocks were like steps) and stopped for a nip of Jameson on the less rocky way down along a well-trod path. I highly recommend a tour with Shane if you want an entertaining insider's view of the Burren.
