点评:We visited the Hangzhou Zoo in October.
Overall, the park features a lot of appealing greenery and foliage, offering a pleasant environment for visitors. Additionally, the ticket price is quite cheap, making it accessible.
However, the primary concern of our visit was the living conditions and visible welfare of some animals.
• Signs of Distress: We observed several animals showing clear signs of psychological distress (stereotypical behaviors). For example, the wolf enclosure was noticeably small, with minimal enrichment for the animal's wellbeing. The wolf was seen pacing repetitively in small circles, which is a widely recognized symptom of psychological stress in captive animals.
• Poor Enclosure Design: The bear enclosure, in particular, lacked natural elements. It contained mostly rocks with very little in the way of plants, trees, or suitable terrain to encourage natural behaviors.
• Missing Animals: We were disappointed that the giraffes and tigers were nowhere to be seen during our visit, despite checking their viewing areas.
The low price aside, the experience left us with a bad conscience. While the setting is lovely, we genuinely hope that the zoo management will allocate more resources to improve the size and enrichment of their enclosures for the welfare of these poor animals. More can and should be done to enhance their living conditions.
