点评:Smailholm is a hidden gem that has been standing on a volcanic rock for 500 years. I take all my visitors here because Smailholm gives you an introduction to South of Scotland landscapes, architecture, history, the reivers, the early years of Sir Walter Scot and the border ballads all in one hit! There's an excellent pottery, too, in nearby Smailholm Village. Not only do you get superb views from the ramparts south to the Cheviots and north to the Lammermuirs, there is a free exhibition of sculptures by Kelso artist Anne Carrick that illustrate the life of Sir Walter Scott and some of the main stories in Scott's 'Minstrelsy of the Scottish Border' that was a huge hit in the early 1800s. The connection between Smailholm and Scottish literature goes beyond Sir Walter Scott. The later great Scottish writer Muriel Spark was passionate about the border ballads. Some of Spark's novels, such as 'The Ballad of Peckham Rye', contain elements of the supernatural and the darker side of her novels can be traced to Muriel Spark's early fascination with the border ballads.
