Bella Maria a perfect high quality boat for two people.

点评：In October/November the last week of the season we hired Bella Maria on the recommendation of our daughter and had a lovely week on the Broads. Arrival at Richardsons was efficient once the check-ins opened at 1pm with friendly greetings and clear instructions from staff.
It was not as busy as we anticipated for a half term week. Mooring was easy including popular spots eg: The Swan Horning. Remote and bank moorings were easy to find everywhere.
Bella Maria is a modern, good looking and well presented boat for two people. On entering the stern door I concur with what someone else said in a previous review and warned of. I am 6’2” tall and like the other reviewer I cracked my head on the door as I entered. Tall people beware. It hurts a lot. The boat handover and trial run by Simon was friendly, and gave us useful and informative information about all the boats systems. Simon suggested two additional blankets which he got for us plus another rope to use on the centre cleats that we asked for.
The ample size double bed was already made up (big bonus) and the bed was super comfy, with good bedside units, drawers, reading lights and power points. Also, full length hanging lockers, TV, small dressing table with mirror, power points and hairdryer. En-suite bathroom was perfect with electric flush toilet, washbasin and heated towel rail which kept it lovely and warm but gurgled and bubbled all the time the heating was on. En-suite also had a full size shower cubicle with good shower pressure. We have done winter cruises before. Hot water bottles recommended.
Heating throughout boat was blown warm air. With simple controls and timer. We never managed to work out how to get the independent thermostats in the saloon and bedroom to control the temperatures so we just turned the heater on and off when we wanted it. We were never cold. The heating combined with an additional blower which was switched on from the main driving console gave us two front window demisters. Slow to get going but reasonably efficient and a big improvement on having to use squeegees and paper kitchen roll to clear overnight condensation.
The galley was light, airy, clean and well appointed with nice crockery and cutlery. The cooker was gas with 3 hobs and oven. The oven was mediocre and had low temperature even on max and slow to cook but adequate once we realised it’s limitations. There is a mains powered microwave which made up for the slow oven. Tip-if you like a small sharp kitchen knife for food prep, bring your own. Storage drawers and cupboards are adequate for two. The fridge was very efficient with good storage and ice compartment.
The saloon was bright and airy, tastefully furnished with nice dining table and comfortable seating. Engine noise is minimal when cruising if the door between the galley and bedroom is closed. The control console and driving position is in the saloon and all controls and safety systems easily accessible. Front door side panels are not glass which creates blind spots when driving but quite manageable once you get used to it. Bow and stern thrusters made mooring super easy and the electric mud weight was another big plus factor. The saloon has a TV and FM radio plus mains and USB power outlets. Not sure if the TV on this boat was satellite or digital but of all the boats we have hired over the years the reception wherever we went was the best we have ever had.
Lighting throughout the boat internal and external was really good with levels that could be varied to suit time of day and mood by well placed switches. Curtains were high quality, thick and colourful and exceeded our expectations. A slight downside is that to cover up the two front windows you have to go outside and put external covers on them. We did not bother.
Water, fuel and holding tanks were adequate for the week. We did not need additional fuel or pump out. We did top up the water when it got down to a quarter, but with two showers each morning this was to be expected.
Were we happy with the boat? Overall yes but with some minor issues but that did not stop us booking Bella Maria for another week in February for a winter cruise, but given the price are worth a mention. They should though to be fair be set against the fact that we hired the boat last week of the season after a busy summer that allows precious little time in between hires for inspection and repairs. We had three issues but none spoilt the holiday. Of more note is how Richardsons dealt with them.
The boat is advertised as having a reversing camera. We know it was there in April, our daughter confirmed that.
When we hired it, it was gone. These are so useful for stern on mooring and slow cruising so that you can see other boats coming up behind you and move over. Internet was another reason we chose Bella Maria but some weeks before we received an e-mail saying the boats no longer had this.
Thirdly, and to be fair Richardsons may not have realised this if the boat has only ever been used as a fair weather cruiser, there are no draught excluders in the canopy running channels meaning wind sometimes just howls into the saloon.
We e-mailed Richardsons in slow time afterwards and found their customer service was fast and responsive. Thankyou Jo. They took on board these issues and replied two days later with a positive friendly response.
In February there will still not be internet on any of the boats. We will bring our own now we know. The reversing camera will be re-fitted and new draught excluders will be installed.
For us that was all we wanted to hear and good customer service with no quibbling. This response says much for their customer service and the reason we were satisfied and happy enough to re-hire the boat for a winter cruise.
In summary. This is an expensive boat and peoples expectations are rightly high. It met 90% of them and those it did not were dealt efficiently by customer service and minor enough not to spoil the holiday. Would we recommend Richardsons and Bella Maria to our family, friends and other couples wanting a bit of luxury while cruising the Broads summer or winter? YES.
Tips: Small dust sheet to soak up dirt & water when stepping into the bedroom. Small cordless vac. Hot water bottles in winter. Go to their lovely on site cafe after return, let hub bub die down and chill while you have a snack and drink before setting off home.
