Rob Roy Glacier Track - Best Kept Secret in Wanaka

点评：I suppose the Roy's Peak track is more popular since it's close to Wanaka town itself, easy to access the trailhead and has the memorable views at the top.
The Rob Roy Glacier Track, however, is an overall superior track. Not as crowded, a more interesting hike through the forest, and a hugely rewarding fantastic view of the Rob Roy Glacier. It is not an easy hike at all, uphill elevation gain of about 1300 ft and the trail is well maintained but more technical with some rocky areas. We began the hike at 11:15, got to the lower lookout at 12:30 and the upper lookout at 1pm. We sat on the grass and ate our lunch for about an hour and enjoyed the gorgeous views of the glacier and about 11 or 12 waterfalls coming down the mountain. We got back to our car at 3:15.
It's a 50km drive from Wanaka - the first 20 kms are paved and the last 30 kms are on an unpaved dirt road. However, it's a very well maintained, pretty smooth road that you can easily travel 60kmh on. The last 5 kms have about 7 or 8 areas where you must ford a creek bed (water coming down the waterfalls in the valley and feeding into the main river). We had no problem driving across them in our rental Rav4. No doubt a 4WD vehicle would be best but we saw plenty of small compact cars make it across fine. We did, however, check in at the Mt Aspiring Natl Park Visitor center in Wanaka to ask about the road to make sure it was in good shape and the fords passable. After a rain event, definitely a good idea.
I've read others say that if you only have one full day in Wanaka, they'd recommend the Rob Roy Glacier over Roy's Peak. I would heartily agree. You wont' regret it.
