点评:We did the 3N/4D tour with East Java Paradise Travel covering Madakaripura Waterfall, Mount Bromo, Tumpak Sewu Waterfall and Mount Ijen. It was honestly one of the best experiences my sister and I have ever had!
A massive thank you to our guide Tony and our driver Nandra who completely made the trip. Tony’s English was amazing and he was such a lovely, funny and knowledgeable guy. Nandra wasn’t as fluent, but his vibe absolutely made up for it. Always smiling, laughing and positive. We spent MANY hours in the car and I genuinely don’t know how Nandra managed all the driving while always staying energetic and safe. Tony was also the best DJ and we had so many laughs together throughout the trip.
What really stood out was how kind and accommodating they both were. Whenever we needed to stop during journeys, Nandra would stop the car straight away, help us find toilets (always free ones if possible!) or somewhere to buy food and drinks. Tony was constantly looking after us too. Buying us snacks, local sugar cane drinks, bananas for hikes, warm teas after long mornings, and cereal bars whenever we needed energy. They genuinely cared about making sure we were okay the whole time.
Tony was also amazing at keeping us informed. Telling us what to wear, what shoes to bring, how long journeys would take and what the plans were each day, which helped so much.
We got picked up from Surabaya around 8am and headed to Madakaripura Waterfall. The journey was around 2 hours. To get there, you take bikes down towards the waterfall base and then walk through rivers and over slippery rocks with a local guide (Tony still came with us too). Helmets were provided for safety and there are waterproof jackets/phone cases available to buy there if needed. There are also toilets, but you’ll need cash (around 5,000). Once you actually reach the waterfall, it’s like standing in a shower! Definitely bring waterproofs and wet shoes as they help massively. Tony and the local guide helped us the entire way, offering hands on slippery sections and taking loads of amazing photos and videos for us. We arrived around 11am which was perfect because we had the place almost to ourselves before it got busy.
Afterwards we stayed near Mount Bromo ready for the next morning. The accommodation wasn’t luxury, but it was comfortable and being surrounded by mountains made up for it. There wasn’t loads to do nearby, but there was a lovely restaurant called Bromo Escapes with beautiful views.
For Bromo we left around 1am and switched into a Land Cruiser (Not a jeep) because of the road conditions. Tony was smart with timing and parking. He got us dropped lower down because he knew the traffic near the top becomes chaos once everyone leaves after sunrise. We stopped at the toilet first (always bring cash because you usually have to pay!) and waited for sunrise in a little shack drinking hot chocolate while teaching Tony card games to pass the time. It was freezing, so definitely bring layers! Tony also bought us bananas for later before we walked up to the viewpoint. Again, Tony somehow got us the perfect spot before it became insanely crowded. The sunrise was honestly one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever seen, absolutely surreal.
After sunrise we headed down and it became CRAZY busy. There were Land Cruisers everywhere and traffic was ridiculous even though it wasn’t peak season yet. We then drove across the black sand towards Mount Bromo itself which looked really cool with all the clouds around us. We stopped for snacks before walking towards the crater. There are horses available if you don’t want to walk, although it was quite sad seeing some of them looking overworked and with dyed hair for tourism. The walk starts fairly flat before getting steeper with lots of stairs near the crater, so definitely carry water. Seeing the sulfur and standing at the crater edge after seeing it from afar earlier was such a cool experience.
We then headed back for breakfast before driving around 3-4 hours to the next accommodation. Again, nothing luxury but still comfortable. It rained that evening so we stayed in for dinner. Food throughout the trip was mostly rice and noodles haha, delicious but a bit repetitive after a few days! My sister is vegetarian and although options were limited sometimes, Tony always made sure restaurants accommodated her properly.
The next morning we left around 6am for Tumpak Sewu Waterfall. Tony guided us while Nandra waited as always. There are MANY slippery stairs down so definitely wear proper shoes! We got there early again before crowds arrived and the views were unbelievable. We also visited Goa Tetes near the cave area which was stunning. Some parts of the climb back up definitely didn’t feel the safest and I believe a section was closed after a previous accident, but Tony helped us every step of the way.
Afterwards we packed up and headed to Bondowoso which took around 4 hours, although Nandra somehow always got us places earlier than expected while still driving safely. This accommodation was probably the nicest one with a pool, bar area and even western food which felt like heaven at that point haha.
For Mount Ijen we had to leave at MIDNIGHT. It took around 2 hours to drive there and we had to wait for the gates to open at 2am. Tony provided us with head torches and gas masks because of the sulfur gases. The hike was definitely the hardest part of the trip, around 10.5km with roughly 600m elevation gain. There were locals offering wheelbarrow-style taxis which was crazy to see. Tony was amazing throughout the hike, always happy to go at our pace and never making us feel rushed when we needed breaks.
We hiked down to the blue flames first which was really cool, although ridiculously busy with people queueing and shining torches everywhere. We then hiked back up to the sunrise viewpoint and WOW. The sunrise colours were stunning and the bright blue crater looked unreal despite all the steam. My sister and I nearly slipped a few times on the way down because it was quite slippery, but Tony’s reactions were so quick we started calling him Lightning McQueen haha.
After the hike we were absolutely exhausted and starving, but thankfully Tony appeared with food again haha. There was also some local fruit at the bottom which tasted incredible after the trek. Although the original plan was to check out before Ijen, Tony and Nandra happily let us return to the accommodation afterwards so we could shower, have breakfast and recover before the 4-5 hour drive back to Surabaya. They were so flexible and accommodating the entire trip.
The landscapes throughout East Java honestly felt unreal. Every place was breathtaking in completely different ways. Yes, there were very early mornings, long drives and challenging hikes, but every second was worth it.
Most importantly though, Tony and Nandra made the experience unforgettable. By the end it genuinely felt like we were travelling with friends. Thank you both so much for all the laughs, kindness, care and memories. It was an honour to meet you both and we will cherish this trip forever. We could not recommend East Java Paradise enough!
