Scenic gardens next to the river Ness
Cavell Gardens的点评
点评：Walking along the Great Glen Way on the south bank of the River Ness you will come to a beautifully kept park/gardens next to the river. You'll probably notice the magnificent war memorial as you approach.
This is Cavell Gardens, names after Nurse Edith Louise Cavell from Norfolk she was born during the latter pary of the nineteenth century on 4th December 1865. In 1907 She was appointed first matron of the Berkendael Medical Institute in Brussels .
During the WWI she was charged with assisting 130 persons to escape from Belgium.
In August 1915 she was court-martialled, condemned to death and shot on 12th October 1915.
Her final courageous words were,
"This I would say, standing as I do in view of
God and eternity,
I realise that patriotism is not enough
I must have no hatred or bitterness towards anyone."
The memorial was Erected In Memory her in 2015 on the one hundredth anniversary of her death.
Even though the gardens are near the busy river and hotels they have a serene atmosphere as you wander around.
There is also a magnificent red sandstone war memorial in the centre of the gardens in memory to those who also gave the ultimate sacrifice in two world wars and conflicts that followed.
The War Memorial at Cavell Gardens, on Ness Bank, Inverness, stands 33 feet high, the Celtic cross was designed by John Hinton Gall. It was unveiled on 16 December 1922 in front of a crowd of 5000.
