点评:As a fit 62-year-old woman from Australia travelling solo, I knew climbing Mt Agung via the Besakih Temple route would be tough… and it absolutely was! There are no doubts about that. This is not your average hike. It’s a very challenging climb—perhaps even extreme—but that’s for each person to decide.
I was fortunate to have Nyoman as my private guide, and from the very beginning we seemed to share the same pace and stamina. We maintained a steady rhythm throughout the climb, which made for a fantastic experience.
What I appreciated most was how attentive Nyoman was. We didn’t chat much while hiking because we were both focused on the climb, but he regularly checked in to make sure I was doing okay. I always felt safe in his hands.
The terrain is incredibly demanding. I have never scrambled over so many rocks, often using both my hands and feet. At times it felt quite precarious, especially with the steep ravines beside the track. Nyoman constantly reminded me to be careful and guided me safely through every difficult section.
Reaching the summit was exhilarating! The final climb along the narrow ridge was probably the scariest part, with sheer drop-offs on both sides, but Nyoman calmly guided me every step of the way.
I was pleasantly surprised there were only around 25 people at the summit. Most were in their 20s, so as a 62-year-old I was quietly proud of what I’d achieved alongside them. Everyone shared the same excitement of reaching the top.
Be prepared for the cold—it was much colder than I expected, especially with the wind. Pack warm layers.
The descent is no easier and certainly not suited to anyone who isn’t reasonably fit. There were sections where I had to sit down to negotiate steep drops, using tree roots as natural steps. Despite making excellent time on the ascent thanks to my fitness, we still enjoyed three well-earned rest stops. At one stage I lay down and nearly drifted off to sleep from sheer exhaustion!
On the way down my knees began to ache, even though I normally don’t have knee problems. Nyoman suggested stepping sideways on some of the steeper sections to reduce slipping, and his advice made a real difference.
When we finally reached the base, I felt a mixture of exhaustion, joy and pure elation. It took me a few days to recover, so I’d definitely recommend planning a couple of relaxing days afterwards.
Would I do it again?
Absolutely.
And I wouldn’t choose anyone other than Nyoman to guide me.
Thank you, Nyoman, for leading me safely on the toughest, most rewarding hike I’ve ever completed. It is an experience I’ll never forget.
