点评:Well, this was unexpected. Hakone district is up in the mountains and not the easiest place to get to - and public transport is mainly buses, which of course are efficient and timely.
And right in the middle of the area is one of the most spectacular museums housing amazing artwork, like it was picked up out of a modern city by a giant and placed somewhere special.
The building is a stunning brutalist construction with elegant Japanese refinement - its concrete but done so well. The content - monets, cezannes - just beggars belief. These are not the third rate unfinished artworks, these are the variants that have made their way around the world.
I question some of the lighting and neighbours in the rooms on display, but that is just being pedantic and snobby. This is an excellent facility and well worth the visit. If you get the bus, it will drop you right outside.
Modest admission - ¥2200 adult - is high value for what you get to see.
The cafe has great food and coffee but is on the pricier side.
Photos of the art exist - like all art you need to see in reality, experience with your own eyes and not the curation of modern technology - so if you’re coming to Hakone, just go. It’s worth it.
