Was able to book tickets for a Saturday on the venue's website but it was closed when we arrived
Patrick Kavanagh Centre的点评
点评:When visiting the website I wondered how there could be so much interest in Patrick Kavanagh on a Saturday morning in a somewhat out of the way small rural town/village in Ireland in early October that timed ticket slots were on sale, but we purchased them just in case. When checking the route the night before I was concerned that Google showed the centre as closed on Saturdays. There was conflicting information elsewhere on the web. I phoned immediately and also early on Saturday but of course there was no reply. After driving approximately 40 miles we arrived to find the centre closed. Hard to believe we were sold tickets on this basis and that we were not alerted to the problem through some kind of audit. The tickets were purchased weeks ago.
We visited PKs grave and as it was a beautiful Autumn day we embarked on the heritage walk mapped at the entrance to the centre. There was no indication of how long this walk was but it was around 4 miles long and other than at one of the final stops, Billy Brennan’s Barn, there was little to see that Kavanagh would recognise, including his family home, where a brand new bungalow was being built on site. The first section was along a busy road. There was a pavement but vehicles went past at an uncomfortable speed. Should you wish to drive the route - possible - there is no parking to speak of at any of the stops, though it might be possible to pull over at some. One point of interest, not actually marked on the route map (it did not exist in PK’s day when his local church is now the centre itself), was the modernist church near the start which is well worth having a look at. We ate lunch at the friendly cafe next door to the centre and stopped off at the tin church at Laragh on our way back. It was unstafed but thankfully open, though it would not be necessary to step inside to appreciate the uniqueness of this place, a fairy tale type construction in a wooded area by a stream. Not sure I have ever seen anything like it. Visit if anywhere near.
That evening I got an email from the centre with an apology and notice of a refund. Refund was minus interim currency devaluation and 2 currency transaction fees. 6% less price paid. It is not being out of pocket that was so frustrating with this episode but the time and effort devoted to it on our short visit to Ireland.
