点评:Let's start by clearing up the issue of this restaurant's name and listing. For those of us who fondly remember the old Friends International Romdeng over on Street 128, this is not that restaurant. Sadly, Friends International no longer operates its training programs in Phnom Penh, having fallen victim to Covid. One suspects this new Romdeng, on the corner of streets 55 and 240, was named to take advantage of the former restaurant's excellent reviews.
If one compares this Romdeng to the previous one, one may be disappointed. The menu is less inventive, and far more conventionally Khmer. Gone are the signature fried tarantula with kampot pepper and lime. Gone are the to-die-for berry smoothies.
However the spirit of the former restaurant does seem to live on in the new one. The staff are all very young, including the kitchen staff (the kitchen is visible from the dining area); the restaurant is set in a villa and is scrupulously clean and comfortable. Not enough is made of the dramatic curving staircase, which could be a feature. Light Khmer popular music played in the background at a volume which drowned out street noise but did not prevent conversation. Solid marks for the environment.
I ate lok lak (disappointed they were out of amok), and fish egg sour soup. The lok lak was very impressive, and the soup was good, although with the slight tendency to over-emphasise lemongrass (this has been noted in other reviews).
Mains were mostly $2.50 to $3.50 and servings were generous.
In short, this is not the old Romdeng, but if you want to try some good honest Indochinese fare in a pleasant environment for next to no money, it's a gem.
我吃了 lok lak(很失望他们没有发脾气)和鱼蛋酸汤。
