A very evocative site, even though we weren't able to visit the interior.
Church of the Panayia Kassopitra的点评
点评:We weren't able to visit the interior of this church because our passage through Kassiopi didn't coincide with the church's opening hours.
So we had to make do with information available online about its antiquity; the fact that it stands on the pre-existing site of a highly regarded pagan place of worship (the Temple of Zeus Kassios); the solid reputation that the icon of the Virgin contained in the church has built as a miracle worker; and the icon's function as the protector of sailors.
But even outside the church, we were able to appreciate the relaxing and shaded courtyard, adorned with a magnificent wisteria pergola; the romantic cemetery located on the left side of the church; The Latin plaque embedded in the church's façade commemorates the church's restoration by the Venetian government in 1580, after its destruction by the Turks in 1537.
