点评:We took this trip on 2 January 26. Due to the recent cyclones and land slides the track was cut so we boarded at Ambewela and got off at Haputale. That’s about 1 hour of travel. We reserved 2nd class set seats on the right hand side of the train, which has the best view. I’m not sure if it’s mentioned anywhere else but the carriages have 50% of the seating facing each way, so depending which direction the train is traveling you may be seated going forwards or backwards. Our seats were facing backwards! That was more of an inconvenience. Obviously this ride is popular as people can hang out the doors and get that perfect instagram photo of them hanging out.
Once the train started traveling, people were rushing to the doors to take photos. It was like rush hour at home. People were leaning over seated people to get the photos of their friends hanging out. The whole thing was comical to watch everyone living their perfect insta-life.
The actual views during the trip were stunning as the train runs along a ridge line and has elevated views over the surrounding regions. You will see plenty of tea plantations, rainforest, gum tree forests and local villagers tending to their market gardens. It’s actually a very nice train journey which provides a different view of the landscape that you cannot get by car. My only question, if you couldn’t hang out of the carriages, would this trip be so popular?
