I first visited Blue Lagoon Island for a dolphin encounter 18 years ago, and I recently returned with my family. Although the experience has changed over the years, I still believe it is one of the best dolphin encounters available.
During my first visit, two dolphins pushed me through the water by the balls of my feet, lifting me almost vertically above the surface. With my arms stretched out, it felt like I was flying—or walking on water. The current experience uses a boogie board for the dolphin push, so it is different, and the overall encounter did not feel quite as long or intimate as I remembered. However, I may also be romanticizing an experience from 18 years ago!
We still had the opportunity to hug and kiss the dolphin and be pushed through the water. We did not get to feed the dolphins this time, which was something I remembered doing during my previous visit. Of course, any amount of time with a dolphin never feels like enough.
Our group had 10 people made up of two families, which was completely manageable. Most importantly, it was obvious that the instructors genuinely cared about the dolphins. That matters a great deal to me and made me feel better about the experience.
This was my third dolphin encounter and my second at Blue Lagoon Island, but it was the first dolphin experience for the rest of my family. They absolutely loved it. Another couple in our group told us they had previously done a dolphin encounter elsewhere that they thought would be hard to beat. Afterward, they said Blue Lagoon was their new favorite.
The island itself has also improved tremendously since my first visit. There is now a beautiful beach area with inflatable water activities that my kids loved. I strongly recommend going directly to the rental area and getting the two covered beach chairs. We paid around $70, and the package included two beach towels and four drinks, so it practically paid for itself. It was a great place to relax between activities.
The drinks were great. We also ordered wings, a chicken wrap, and fries. The food was good—not extraordinary—but perfectly fine for a beach excursion, and there were enough options to keep everyone fed.
What makes this experience special is being in natural lagoon and ocean water rather than a shallow pool-like setting. It feels much more immersive and memorable.
I love Blue Lagoon Island and would absolutely recommend the dolphin encounter. It may be different from the experience I had 18 years ago, but it is still fantastic. If you have never done a dolphin encounter before, do it!
