点评:After lunch at Duke's, neither of us was in much of a hurry to leave. Whalers Village is an easy walk along Kaʻanapali Beach, so we spent the rest of the afternoon wandering through the shops, enjoying the ocean views, and seeing where the day took us.
Whalers Village strikes a nice balance between an upscale shopping center and a relaxed beachfront destination. You'll find everything from surf shops and Hawaiian specialty stores to art galleries, jewelry, and local gifts. Even if shopping isn't normally your thing, it's simply a pleasant place to stroll with the beach only a few steps away.
One of my favorite stops was Martin & MacArthur, where everything seemed to be crafted from a beautiful Hawaiian wood.
I picked up a polished koa pepper grinder, turning it over in my hands. Marcus appeared beside me.
"That's koa," he said. "It's a Hawaiian hardwood. Really beautiful. Lasts a long time."
"Oh." I looked at it more closely. "I just thought it was pretty."
He smiled.
"It can be both."
We eventually wandered into the ABC Store—always dangerous if you're trying not to buy souvenirs. Between the Kona coffee, Hawaiian snacks, and all the little things you suddenly convince yourself you "need," it's remarkably easy to leave carrying more than you intended.
There are also plenty of places to sit, relax, and watch the world go by. Between the shade, the beach path, live entertainment, and steady flow of people, it's surprisingly easy to spend several hours here without ever feeling rushed. Somehow what was supposed to be a quick stop turned into one of our favorite afternoons on Maui.
If you're staying in Kaʻanapali, I'd recommend setting aside at least half a day instead of treating Whalers Village as just another shopping center. The stores are worth exploring, but it's the atmosphere that makes you lose track of time.
