Street Murals By Aruba Art Fair的点评
点评：The dozens of street murals in San Nicholas and not only cool in their own right, but also because of their role in the town's revitalization.
San Nicholas sits in the shadow of a century-old refinery. The refinery has been closed for about 5 years and, according to news reports, will be dismantled for parkland or other uses. In the meantime, the town has turned to its creative side to reinvent itself.
The street murals apparently started during the Aruba art fair. It's difficult to count them as they are all over the place, some are in multiple sections, there are some "unofficial" murals, and they paint new ones from time to time. The tourist office places the total at around 80 murals.
The center of San Nicolas is compact, and the streets are easy to walk. There is parking everywhere and it's mostly free. You should have no trouble finding the vast majority of the artwork.
You'll want to start your trip at the tourist information center (there is free parking across the street by the small bus terminal, and around the corner). There, a nice woman will give you a map of the town with the murals identified. Currently one of the murals is in 3-D -- they'll give you those red and blue glasses to see it. [The guide says there are two, but one is currently being replaced by a new mural].
From the tourist office, it is a very, very easy walk around the town. About half the buildings in the center have murals, so the distance between them is not far at all.
A few places not to miss:
-Starting at the roundabout in front of the tourist information office is a diagonal street (the name is a mouthful -- Bernhard vonde Veen Zeppenfeldstraat -- but it's easier to say just take the diagonal street). There is a yellow cafe at the corner called the Kultur Cafe (it's great for coffee or lunch, by the way, plus it has ice cream). That street seems to be the center of things. One building has been painted so that the whole front, including doors, looks like a giant face.
While the streets have names, one reason you want the map is that the street names are not very well marked. It's easier to orient yourself to the diagonal street and landmarks like the striking Museum of Industry, or the police station (more about that below). The map from the tourist office is great for this.
This street is maybe 200 yards or meters long and has roughly 20 murals. There are lots of murals along the short side streets. This central area, roughly 6 short streets, has about 50 of the murals.
From the end of the diagonal street you will want to round the corner to see the happiest police station in the world on Bernhardstraat (there is a Citgo station on the corner and a nice church opposite). The police station has multiple murals, and there are others on the surrounding buildings.
One street over from the police station is Piet Heinstraat (look at the map they give you). Although it is about a 3-minute walk, it is well worth it as there are several terrific murals there. One (#56 on the map) is of a heron, but if you put on your 3-D glasses, you will see its skeleton.
There is a colorful "Greetings from Aruba" mural that is great for photos. Each letter is its own mural. It is in an open lot just off the diagonal. It is number 73 on the tourist map.
While you are in town, stop at one of the local restaurants for coffee or lunch -- it's a way to support the renewal effort. Just a short walk from the central area is Charlie's allegedly the oldest pub on the island.
This is a fun and largely free way to enjoy an hour or so and to help celebrate the town's resurgence.
