点评:We stayed in Jenna and Safa’s beautiful long house the night before and after a trek. Their place was the loveliest we had stayed in Indonesia. We were made very welcome by Jenna and Cora, their friendly dog. Our room was beautiful and the bed was incredibly comfy. Our vegetarian dinner was super tasty and freshly cooked and we also enjoyed the dragon fruit, papaya and pineapple mocktail that was a delicious smoothie made with their frozen fruit. Breakfast was great also with dragon fruit, papaya, pineapple, banana and snake fruit - far more fresh and varied than we had had elsewhere.
Safa and Jenna have built this amazing place - it is beautifully crafted and in a wonderful setting overlooking the Gunung Leuser National Park.
Safa took us on a night trek which was great fun. We saw a slow loris, green pit viper, civil cat, flying squirrel and a lantern bug amongst the creatures we saw.
We did a two day one night jungle trek with Eddie (apologies for the spelling) and Mamun.
Jenna talked us through the logistics of the trek, giving us sleeping bags and leech socks.
You carry what you need for the duration of your jungle stay for the first few hours of the trek so take plenty of water and insect repellent. Binoculars are recommended as well - we used ours a lot. The guides take a tent and sleeping mats for you.
We saw 8 orangutan during our first day’s trek with our guide, Eddie, including the alpha male and a mother with a 3 year old baby and we got to watch each of these for some time as they went about their business. It was amazing to be able to see orangutan in the wild.
We also saw lots of Thomas leaf monkeys and long tailed macaque.
Mamum cooked us the most delicious vegetarian feast in the evening on woks over an open fire. We have no idea how he managed it but there was a vegetable and tofu curry, tempeh fritters, vegetable fritters, another very tasty tempeh dish and rice amongst the food he magically produced.
The campsite is very busy, smoky and noisy - the sound from the river helps to muffle the sound of the guides socialising but, unless you are an excellent sleeper, I would advise taking earplugs.
We went for an early trek before breakfast and saw wreathed hornbill and crested hornbill.
After banana pancakes and fruit for breakfast, Mamun took us on an hour’s trek to get to the hot springs. He was really great at helping us across the fast flowing river on the logs we had to walk over and up and down the challenging sections of the walk.
We had a wonderful time exploring and hiking. We returned to Jenna and Safa’s place exhausted and exhilarated, and very grateful for a hot shower and a comfortable bed.
We would highly recommend Sumatra Jungle for exploring the Gunung Leuser National Park as the guides are respectful of the wildlife and care deeply for the forest and Jenna and Safa are fantastic hosts.
