点评:The gardens are physically stunning, but the visit left me feeling deeply conflicted due to the lack of transparency on-site.
While the ‘Noah’s Ark’ walled gardens are an engineering marvel, they were built using wealth Sir Rose Price extracted from the Worthy Park sugar plantation in Jamaica. It is hard to enjoy the tropical plants when you realise they were funded by the forced labor of hundreds of enslaved people.
According to the National Trust’s own 2020 ‘Interim Report on the Connections between Colonialism and Properties,’ the estate was stabilized by a government payout of over £15,000 in the 1830s as compensation for the loss of enslaved people. In today’s money, that is over £2 million.
It’s disappointing that there is still no prominent memorial at the entrance to honor those whose labor paid for this beauty.
