点评:The hike up Soufriere is probably the most well-known activity in Guadeloupe. It certainly is a popular one: I counted 100+ cars in the parking lot (more accurately, the tiny lot and down the road 1/2 km). The route is very well marked. It starts out with cobblestones, then steps and then becomes a difficult climb up a steep, rock-strewn path. Hikers reach more of a summit area than the summit. It’s very cloudy/smokey/foggy, though the skies clear for a few minutes at a time to catch a glimpse of the crater or the ocean and the Les Saintes islands. It is an active volcano and I could smell the sulfur (curiously at the base of the trail and not the summit). There is an area that is blocked off and only accessible with a guide and that requires gas masks. It would be an interesting tour. On the way down, you can go back the way you came or continue around Soufriere to another mountain called Echelles. This trail was narrow and rocky with dense vegetation, but provided some different views, which made it more interesting than an out-and-back.
This is a difficult hike. Ascending is a lung-buster and descending is a knee-buster! The total distance was about 6.5 miles and took almost 4 hours; a distance I’d cover in <2.5 hours on a graded trail. It’s a must-do hike but the summit was somewhat of a letdown considering the difficulty.
