I don’t understand the hype around this tour

点评：We booked the Twilight Experience with Footprints well in advance because it is so highly rated everywhere. Unfortunately, we cannot share this enthusiasm.
We were picked up from our hotel on time and arrived at the meeting point around 6:00 pm. However, we did not actually depart until about 6:15 pm, as some guests who had booked dinner beforehand were still finishing their meal. This was followed by a roughly 30-minute drive to the Kauri trees, with several stops along the way to pick up additional guests.
The actual walk in the forest was good. The guide was knowledgeable, explained a lot, and clearly put in a great deal of effort. This was definitely the highlight of the evening.
Afterwards, we drove back again for about half an hour and arrived back at the starting point around 9:15 pm. The tour is advertised as a four-hour experience, but in reality it lasted only about three hours. Of those, more than an hour was spent driving and nearly half an hour waiting for other guests. The net time in the forest was only around one and a half hours.
What disappointed us most was how this tour is marketed. Descriptions such as “life-changing,” “intimate,” and “spiritual encounters” feel highly exaggerated. There were 19 guests plus two guides – 21 people walking through the forest together. There was nothing intimate or spiritual about this experience; it felt much more like a mass-tourism activity.
Ironically, we had visited the same areas on our own earlier that afternoon and encountered far fewer people than during this supposedly exclusive tour.
Overall, the Twilight Experience was a disappointment for us. Especially so because we made a detour via Opononi specifically for this tour due to its outstanding reviews. For that reason, we can only give it two stars.
