Historic Tunnel - bit of an adventure walking through
Sendall Tunnel的点评
点评：Thursday 12th February we walked through this historic Tunnel in St George's.
We walked along Melville Street from the Cruise Terminal in the direction of Fort George, the tunnel literally runs under the hill the Fort sits on.
It is on the flat and links one side of the City to the picturesque Carenage, the bay/harbour wharf, without having to climb up and down the steep hills.
From the sign over the Tunnel we learnt that it was built in 1894 and has a maximum height of 7 feet.
There is a noticeboard mounted on the wall by the entrance to the Tunnel, with the following information:-
"The Sendall Tunnel is one of the unique historical sites in the picturesque town of St George's s. Opened in the year 1894 by the British in Honour of the Islands Governor Sir Walter Sendall.
This Tunnel is approximately 350 feet long, nine feet high. Connects the East and West side of the Town; From The Carenage to the Esplanade. The Sendall Tunnel is deemed an engineering milestone for the 19th century for the Island."
Sendall was Governor-in-Chief of the Windward Islands from 1885 to 1889, he promoted the construction of roads on the Island and founded a botanical garden
.
As we walked through the tunnel we could dents and scars on the ceiling and walls where they had been hit as vehicles passed through. Perhaps they misjudged the width or height of the Tunnel.
From some it is a bit scary walking through the Tunnel in close proximity to the traffic, which passes through in one direction. Stay close to the side wall when walking, it's fine.
We did walk through the Tunnel in both directions, however later on we passed through here again, this time from the comfort of the Street Train.

当我们穿过隧道时，可以看到天花板和墙壁上有许多凹痕与划痕——那是车辆通过时造成的。或许他们当初对隧道的宽度或高度估计有误。对有些人来说，紧贴着单向通行的车辆行走穿过隧道会有点吓人。走路时紧贴着侧壁即可，这样就没问题。
我们确实沿着两个方向都穿过过这条隧道，不过后来我们又一次经过这里，只不过这次是坐在舒适的街面列车里。
