Horsetooth Reservoir is one of the best outdoor recreation spots in Fort Collins, Colorado and truly a gem of Northern Colorado. Located just west of Fort Collins, Horsetooth Reservoir offers boating, paddle boarding, kayaking, swimming, fishing, hiking, biking, and some of the most beautiful sunset views along the Front Range.
The Horsetooth Reservoir trails are well maintained and perfect for hiking, trail running, and mountain biking, with scenic overlooks of the reservoir, the foothills, and the surrounding Rocky Mountain landscape. The Horsetooth Rock area is especially popular for hiking and photography, and the reservoir itself is ideal for boating, paddle boarding, and relaxing along the shoreline.
What makes Horsetooth Reservoir special is how accessible it is. You can be in downtown Fort Collins and then at the lake in under 15 minutes. It’s incredibly clean, well managed, and family-friendly, with multiple access points including South Bay, Inlet Bay, Satanka Bay, and Lory State Park nearby.
