Well restored old Fort buildings, now a party venue, great views of English and Falmouth Harbours

点评：Friday 6th February we had just been to visit the Blockhouse Fort on our organised Tour of the Highlights of Antigua and this was our next stop.
It was literally just down the road, a 3 minute drive, 650 metres. Like the Blockhouse Fort the Heights are located within the Nelson's Dockyard National Park, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Originally Shirley Heights was a military lookout and gun battery, perched at it's vantage point 490 feet above English Harbour. From here there are panoramic views along the coast including English and Falmouth Harbours.
It was built in the 1780s with the purpose of protecting the naval base in the harbour below. It was named in honour of Sir Thomas Shirley, who was a Governor of the Leeward Islands.
The Fort previously housed a Guard House, Magazine, kitchen, officers' quarters, kitchen, a canteen, parade grounds and a 30 bed hospital. There are still some ruins to see.
In the 1980s a number of the main buildings were tastefully restored and repurposed and are now used as a party and live music venue, a number of events are held here on a weekly basis. The Sunday evening barbecue/party is rather famous and well attended.
In the distance, amongst the trees we did spot a white marble obelisk, which is in a small historic military cemetery. Our Guide informed us that It honors the officers and soldiers of the British 54th Regiment (2nd Battalion Dorsets) who died while serving in the West Indies between 1840 and 1851. On the obelisk are the names of roughly 50 soldiers and officers.
At the time of our visit it was rather quiet, no events being put on, however, the bar and restaurant were open. There were also a few makeshift stalls selling souvenirs, mainly arts and crafts.
