Beautiful Setting, Great Lunch—but Beware Hidden Costs

点评：My husband and I visited this winery during our honeymoon in Italy. The setting was stunning, and we genuinely enjoyed the lunch and wine. However, the experience came with a costly surprise that future visitors should be aware of.
The lunch itself felt like a well-orchestrated sales pitch—which we expected and didn’t mind. We ended up purchasing eight bottles of wine to ship home, based on the salesman’s assurance that shipping to Canada was “no hassle” and that there might only be a “small” import fee upon arrival. Unfortunately, that “small” fee turned out to be a 102.2% levy (143.7% for spirits), plus duties, taxes, and filing fees. After spending over €400 on wine, we paid nearly $800 CAD in additional charges just to receive the order.
We fully acknowledge that we should have researched Canadian import laws beforehand—that’s on us. However, the winery clearly took advantage of our ignorance. They never disclosed the true cost implications, despite being well aware of them. In fact, UPS (which collects the fees before DHL delivers) confirmed they deal with this winery frequently and that many customers are blindsided by these charges.
To make matters worse, the shipment took over two months to arrive because the winery uses DHL International and routes imports through Quebec—a province where alcohol imports are restricted—causing significant delays and weeks of back-and-forth calls before the order was finally released to Ontario.
Bottom line: If you’re visiting from Ontario (or anywhere in Canada), do your homework before buying. The winery will not volunteer this information, and the “easy shipping” they promise comes with hefty costs and headaches. While the experience was memorable, the lack of transparency left a sour taste.
