Worth Seeing, But a Stressful Trip

点评：During our stay on the Big Island, one of the excursions we set up ahead of time, was a tour to the Mauna Kea summit. Unfortunately, due to the incoming hurricane Nolo, our excursion was cancelled, and there were no openings on any later days before we flew home. But there was one day, the day before the hurricane neared the island (and the day before our cancelled scheduled trip) that was still pretty decent, and they had not yet closed the road to the summit. So we decided to drive up there on our own to take a look.
When you stop at the base of the summit, at the visitors center, they have some requirements you must follow. Stay there for 30 minutes (adjust to altitude), have a 4WD or AWD vehicle, use your low gear coming down the mountain to protect the brakes, etc. Once you leave the park ranger who gives you instructions, you head up a paved road for a couple hundred yards and then.....the road disappears! It's basically a gravel / lava rock road for about the next 6 miles. And very stressful! You do come back to a paved road near the top, when you can start to see all the telescopes. When we did finally get to the top, it is beautiful up there. On the day we went, there were lots of clouds from the incoming hurricane, and we were actually above them. Pretty cool. But that's about it. Not much else to see.
The ride down is also a bit stressful, in low gear. It's quite an incline, and there were a couple of times I thought the engine was going to hit red line, it was revving so high. You definitely have to use your brakes, you just need to be smart about it. The summit is worth seeing, if nothing other than the fact that it's amazing it is there on this tropical island.

下山时也必须用低档位，同样挺让人紧张的。坡度相当陡。有几次我觉得发动机转速快要达到红线了，转得实在太高了。这时就一定要踩刹车，不过得巧妙运用才行。山顶的景色绝对值得一看，哪怕仅仅是因为它竟然出现在这座热带岛屿上，本身就已令人惊叹不已。
