点评:On our last day in Hawaii, we had an afternoon flight, so my son and I took the morning to see a couple of the historic and natural sites of the Big Island. Perhaps, after Hawaii Volcanoes NP, no natural site is more impressive and significant on the Big Island than Akaka Falls. At 442 feet it is one of the tallest falls in the state and the highest we saw during our stay.
While the morning could not have been more beautiful on the leeward side of the island where our hotel was, our visit to windward side was cloudy with sporadic light rain. It made the volume of the falls impressive, but the mist obscured the overall majesty during our visit. I will say the abundant water did make the vegetation along the trail and around the falls tall, beautiful and lush. In fact, I probably walked away from the visited more enamored with the lush vegetation than the falls.
Due to the rain, the crowd was small. The park is free but there is a nominal cost for parking. The park is only a short distance off the main road; however, there are a series of turns through a neighborhood. Still, it is a fairly easy visit. Once there, you all a short way through the jungle to a great overlook of the falls. Again, the day of our visit, the pictures will show how lush, moist and humid the falls and river gorge are. Hawaii is known for its waterfalls, and we had a chance to visit 3 of them. This was the tallest and most impressive.
