点评:Built in 1836, this stunning brick Federal style building with the huge Greek Revival white columns regally commands Dahlonega's public square. Serving as Lumpkin County's Courthouse from 1836-1965, it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, with some of the wall 24 inches thick. It is the oldest surviving county courthouse in the state and to think that some people wanted to tear it down for parking when the new courthouse was built less than a mile away. Thank goodness the State of Georgia purchased it for the Gold Museum.
The museum has a nice film and exhibits, maps, plaques etc. giving you a real feel for the impact that the gold rush of 1828 had on the area and the fact the United States actually placed a Mint here. There are millions of dollars in gold displayed on the 1st floor and the inside of the property is impressive also. The judge's chambers and jury room upstairs are interesting bring you back to the main use of the property. The young staffer was excellent answering our many questions and giving us a lot of information on Dahlonega.
