We recently took a trip on the Strasburg Rail Road and, overall, had a good time. We had watched quite a few videos of the train ride beforehand, so we felt like we pretty much knew what to expect.
We ended up choosing the First Class Lounge, and I’m glad we did. The seats were comfortable, the AC was a nice bonus, and we could actually hear the information being shared along the way. The train itself was also really well maintained and had a great old-school feel to it.
The ride itself, though, was a little underwhelming. It’s advertised as a 45-minute ride, but it’s really about 20 minutes going one direction, then turning around and going back to the station. So you’re essentially seeing the same scenery twice. It just felt like there could have been a little more to the experience.
The other thing that surprised us was the food. We ordered some root beer, pretzels and a few other snacks, and honestly, we were expecting something more local. Instead, we got the typical big-name brands you can find pretty much anywhere. I think this was a missed opportunity. There are local hand-rolled pretzels, local root beer and plenty of other Lancaster-area products that could have really added to the experience.
Especially at around $45 a seat, I think there are some easy ways to make the experience feel more worthwhile. The train is beautiful, it’s well maintained, and we definitely enjoyed being on it. I just think incorporating more local food, drinks and maybe a little more entertainment or interaction along the route could take the experience to another level.
Overall, we’re glad we did it and enjoyed our time on the train. I just think there’s definitely room to make it feel like more than a 20-minute ride down the tracks and back.
