点评：A longtime "StarDate" devotee, this was a must-see, and I wasn't disappointed. I booked two activities. First, there was a daytime tour of the Harland J. Smith telescope and also the Hobby-Eberly Telescope (HET). The tour guide, a geologist by training, was excellent, and though the Smith telescope was undergoing maintenance while I was there, the orientation was fascinating (ask about the holes in the reflector). Second, there was a post-sunset viewing time in the visitor center's beautiful red sandstone amphitheatre. The speaker used a laser pointer to guide us through late winter constellations. Then we were given opportunities to look through six different telescopes. Celestial viewings included striped Jupiter (directly overhead) with its Galilean moons, the Pleaides star cluster, the double-star Castor, the Orion Nebula (or Trapezium Cluster), and the so-called "Double Cluster" (also known as Caldwell 14, or open clusters NGC 869 and NGC 884). The Moon was one night past full phase - thus, but for a cloud bank to the east, the evening sky would have largely been washed out. In a stroke of good luck, the cloud bank actually enhanced our observations of the stars and planets. Around 9 pm, the Moon rose above the cloud bank, giving us a dandy lens-filling view of the "mare" and particularly of Tycho Crater, which shone like a star on the face of an orb that was effectively at high noon, with few or no shadows. There was a break of about 2 1/2 hours between the two events, affording me a time to visit nearby Indian Lodge and to grab dinner in Fort Davis
