点评:We started early, and that was easily one of the best decisions of the day. Parking around the Avalanche area can become difficult very quickly, so it helps to arrive with a backup plan rather than assuming a space will be available.
The walk begins gently through Trail of the Cedars, but the route changes after the junction. From there, the path becomes narrower and more uneven, with roots, rocks, and a steady climb through dense forest. We would describe it as moderate rather than easy.
Avalanche Gorge was one of the highlights, although the fast, cold water and slippery rocks deserve real caution. The maintained boardwalk and bridge already provide excellent views, so there is no need to step onto wet rocks for a closer photo.
The first view of Avalanche Lake is impressive, but we continued along the western shoreline toward the head of the lake. That extension added roughly 1.4 miles round trip and gave us a different perspective of the basin. Before continuing, we checked the weather, daylight, water, food, and whether our pace still allowed a relaxed return.
At the far end, we stopped for water, electrolytes, something salty, and a PROTABAR with the rest of the food we had packed. It was a convenient part of our trail-fueling plan, especially before turning back, but definitely not a substitute for carrying enough water and other food.
The scenery is outstanding, but hikers should still be prepared for crowds, active bear habitat, changing mountain weather, and slippery sections after rain. Carry bear spray where it is immediately accessible, not buried inside a backpack.
A memorable hike and absolutely worth doing, especially when you start early and leave enough time to enjoy the lake without rushing.
