点评:The UK is seemingly littered with National Trust castles and ruins but there are very few "middle class" historic homes to have survived. 1620s House & Garden at Donington le Heath is a charmer and a big surprise. Built in 1290 with additions in 1620 for the landholding gent's daughter's wedding, this is a 2-bedroom, 2-storey house for a family of moderate wealth with a scullery, kitchen, dairy, great hall and study surrounded by kitchen gardens.
We had a toasted ham and cheese sandwich with a cup of tea and freshly made lime cake at the tea rooms, which have local products and gifts for sale and walked around the gardens which had all the herbs, plants and trees you'd expect to see, but also a fascinating "dye" garden with the flowers they grinded to obtain colours for dyeing fabric, but also food - ie red Leicestershire cheese.
Then we joined a small tour led by Helen from Leicestershire City Council and she was such a great guide, showing us all the tools and utensils of the time, such as the stone cheese press, wooden mice trap, leather beer jugs, copper cream skimmer, and cow horn sausage making tool for example, as well as telling us the history behind so many common phrases. Apparently the house and garden were in ruins and was bought by a farmer in the early 1960s and his building applications were rejected so he let his pigs live in the house. When the local community discovered this living piece of history was a literal pigsty, they were rightly outraged and urged the council to buy it and so Leicestershire City Council did so and undertook major structural restorations 1965-1972 before it opened as a museum, and in 2016 restored and "staged" the house as it would have been in the 1620s. I've been to more historic homes than I can remember but I learnt more today from Helen than any of them combined. Well done, Helen and Leicestershire City Council. If you're visiting Leicestershire this is a must-see.
