Pileated Woodpecker Saves the Day

点评：This was my first visit to Eco Pond. Since we could not kayak on Florida Bay for the wind, we did not get to the dozens of wading birds. I had always heard Eco Pond was a great place for bird watching in the park, so I brought our group of 10. We walked around the pond and saw nothing until we were about to return to our cars when a pileated woodpecker flew past us into a tree nearby. For those of you not familiar with woodpeckers, the pileated woodpecker is the largest woodpecker in North America and 3rd in the word and the same species as Woody the Woodpecker. While listed as a least concern for its species, these birds are a rare treat to see. We also had the chance to hear the bird striking the tree with its beak. It was worth the visit to see the pileated woodpecker, but total void of life otherwise.
