点评:I wasn’t initially planning to write a review, but our experience during our visit to Maui on Thursday, 8/20, left such a negative impression that I feel it is important to share.
We visited with our entire family, including my son, who has multiple severe food allergies. Before our visit, I researched the park’s policy and understood that outside food could be brought in with proper medical documentation. I brought both a doctor’s note and a FARE sheet, signed by his physician’s office, clearly documenting his allergies.
When we first entered, the gentleman at the entrance was kind and understanding. He reviewed our documentation and saw that we had one small 2-ounce personal bag of Lay’s chips, a small tube of stackable chips, and a sandwich for my son. He allowed us to bring the food in, which we greatly appreciated.
Throughout our visit, our family also purchased food and drinks from the park, including ice pops, a margarita, two hot dogs, drinks, and fries. We were absolutely willing to support the park and purchase food for the rest of our family.
Later, the park temporarily closed due to nearby lightning. When we returned, we encountered a female manager who spoke to us in a way that I found extremely condescending and inappropriate.
She questioned how much food my son could possibly eat based on the amount of chips we had with us. To be clear, we were talking about a 2-ounce personal bag of chips and approximately half of a small tube of stackable chips. I do not believe anyone should be questioning a parent about how much food their child with severe allergies is allowed to eat.
She also informed us that Gatorade was not permitted. We were completely understanding of that and immediately returned it to our car.
What was especially disappointing was the manager’s comment that the policy was going to change and that they were going to speak with the board about adding more allergy-friendly options. While I would welcome more allergy-friendly choices, she then made a comment suggesting that allergies happen because of additives in our food. As a parent of a child with serious food allergies, I found that comment unnecessary, uninformed, and completely inappropriate.
My niece also has a FARE plan for anaphylaxis to milk and had brought chips with her. The manager then questioned why she had brought food as well, saying, “What, your other party doesn’t have enough chips for her?”
I found that comment incredibly upsetting. It is not anyone’s place to decide how much food a child with a medical condition should have with them. These children already have to navigate feeling different in restaurants, public places, and at school because of something they have no control over. The last thing they need is to overhear an adult making condescending comments about their food.
We understand that parks need to have rules regarding outside food, and we are more than willing to follow those rules. What we are asking for is compassion, understanding, and respectful communication, especially when dealing with children who have documented medical conditions.
I hope management will use this experience as an opportunity to better train staff on food allergies and, more importantly, on how to communicate with families dealing with them. A little kindness and understanding can make a tremendous difference to a child and their family.
