Truly a hidden gem of St Louis

点评：My wife had suggested to stop by here to see the church. I will freely admit that I was not excited about it. I have seen several churches both in the United States and in Europe. Another church was not really my idea of sightseeing in St Louis. I am happy to admit I was wrong. The Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis is an impressive landmark in the Central West End. The exterior is solid Romanesque-style, but step inside and you’re hit with one of the most stunning collections of mosaics I’ve seen. There is a small parking in the back of the church and street parking. It is free to enter but please be respectful of others and the signage of where/when you can go and where they allow pictures inside. The walls and ceilings of this massive church are covered with over 41 million tiny pieces covering the walls and domes in incredible detail. Construction started in 1907 and the main structure was completed in 1914, though the mosaics took decades longer to finish. It’s peaceful, well-maintained, and worth a visit whether you’re religious or just appreciate grand architecture and craftsmanship. They offer tours and there is a small museum if you want the full history. I highly recommend that you visit this church when you’re in St. Louis.
