点评:The La Brea Tar Pits was something that made a core memory in my child hood, growing up in Southern California - we would come here every few years growing up.
While on a trip to Southern California, I took my Boyfriend to the La Brea Tar Pits - he didn't even know a place like this existed. I had been watching the TV show "La Brea" last year and he thought it was an odd show and I tried explaining about the pits and the irony of it to me.
He was amazed by our visit here. ALOT has changed since the last time I had visited over 20 years ago, but so much more has been discovered in the pits since then.
While visiting this time, I learned that this is the ONLY visitable tar pit. Growing up near here it wasn't until I heard that that I realized how lucky I was to grow up near such amazing parts of history.
We got to see volunteers & researchers actively working on removing tar from items in the crates out front near the tar pits, they have updated the inside and have the Lab visible for the public to view the scientists actively working to preserve fossils from the tar. They were sifting through micro items at one station, uncasting a Mastodon skull and tusks as well as cataloging various specimens. There are multiple Tar Pits outside with alot of information on the history. I found the wall of Dire Wolf Skulls found within one of the Tar Pits incredible. There are over 400 skulls on the wall.
Though the museum & tar pits are smaller than I remember them as a kid, it was an incredible experience to see all the changes they have made and share a piece of my childhood with my BF.
If you are into museums, this is a must see, it is truly one of a kind.
