点评:Recently, our small Christian school took a field trip here. We had some positive experiences, ok experiences, and terrible experiences throughout the day.
Price was pretty good for a whole day trip with lunch included. We were able to do several things, see tons of gators, hold exotic animals, get our pictures taken with them, etc. I feel like it was pretty well worth the money we paid.
The look and feel of the park is questionable at best. It definitely has an abandoned feel to it and honestly makes you question how safe many parts of it are. There is not a lot between you and some amazingly large alligators, a puma, wolf, etc. The bridges and walkways look and feel like they could give way at any moment into a huge alligator habitat, etc. Thankfully no one got hurt throughout the day, so we made it out unscathed, but I feel like that might be more of the “exception” rather than the “rule”.
The absolute worst part of the whole experience was the staff. We were a very small group as far as most school groups go. We had 23 students ranging in age from 6-17 years old and more than 10 adults. Our student to adult ratio was fantastic. Our kids are not wild, out of control, disruptive, or disrespectful. The two ladies at the door were not terribly friendly right off the bat and seemed like they didn’t really want us there. Then, our guide for most of the day started her safety talk telling us how if the kids were to run and fall and get hurt on the concrete that we would “be out of a tour guide for a full 5 minutes because she’d be too busy laughing at them.” This was probably supposed to be a joke, but not a single person in our group thought this was funny. It was just super rude. She later said basically the same thing again when she said she “cared if the animals got hurt, but if the kids got hurt, she wouldn’t care because that’s not her job to care, it’s the teacher’s job to care if the kids get hurt”. Also, not funny…. She proceeded to yell at them throughout the day. She told them to shut up at one point, instead of politely asking for their attention. As soon as the students knew she wanted them to be quiet, they were quiet immediately. There was no reason to be rude. She also accused them of breaking the rules at one point, but all the adults were right there. There was not a single rule being broken and she never mentioned what rule it was that we “weren’t following”. She even somewhat threatened that the tour would end if we couldn’t do what she said. Our students were sitting down in the animal encounter room. No animals were even out yet and when she mentioned that she would bring out a snake, several students joked that one of our teachers really wanted to hold it (that particular teacher is terrified of snakes). It was just a tease towards the teacher. No rule was being broken.
Another thing that really bothered me was how condescending she was when they asked questions she thought were “dumb” or unnecessary. She often times made them feel or look stupid if they didn’t get the answer correct or asked normal questions that children ask. Then, after getting tired of that, and our kids would get quieter, she would get cranky with them about not asking enough questions and saying our “group was boring and not fun like other groups they get.” Well let’s see, you’ve fussed at them, told them to shut up, and have repeatedly made them feel stupid. Why would they want to ask questions or engage further? Then she took them to look at several Indian tools, weapons, and items that Indians would have used daily. She would ask them over and over what the item was, what it was used for, and what it was made out of. At one point, she showed a tool. One of our students (actually one of my own sons) answered that the tool was a hoe. She got super offended and said that she didn’t appreciate him calling her a hoe. My son doesn’t even know what the slang word “hoe” is. He is being raised in a Christian home and a Christian school to be a gentleman. Maybe they are unfamiliar with the fact that a teenage boy can be a gentleman, but he certainly wasn’t calling her a hoe and that was very clear. She told him that he should have said it was a “garden hoe”. Absolutely ridiculous. 🙄😒 She asked them to identify multiple spears, knives, etc, and asked what each weapon was used for but was seemingly offended when they would answer that they were tools and weapons meant for “stabbing”. She said they took their answers “too far” and didn’t need to use the word “stab”. What was the purpose in making them answer questions about weapons then if you are uncomfortable with the correct answers? Just give a lecture and tell us the words YOU want used then. Half of her facts were incorrect anyway which made the whole thing feel really pointless.
It wasn’t just our main guide. There was a man named Ryan who took us on the boat tour. He was ridiculous. The whole time he was unprofessional and crude making South Park references, jokes about sexual consent, etc etc. Most of us couldn’t wait to get off the boat. Are these the absolute end of the world? No. But overall there was a complete lack of professionalism, any real educational value to the boat ride, and he clearly couldn’t “read the room” well that we are a Christian school and we didn’t really get or appreciate his alcoholic references, sexual references, or pop culture references. We did not see a single animal on that part of the tour. We didn’t hear anything about local history, animals, birds, local flora, etc etc. We just sat on the boat and had to listen to whatever weird thing he was saying.
One final thing that I did not think was done well and felt was a health and safety concern was hand washing. After holding a baby alligator, a snake, and a tarantula, we were supposed to go immediately to lunch. (Instead of telling our tour guide over her walkie talkie that she had with her that they were ready for us to come to lunch, they YELLED it across the park to us several times while our guide was still presenting animals to our group.) On the way out the door, she told the students to get one pump of hand sanitizer. Um…. Gross! That is not acceptable. I don’t care what kind of third rate operation this is. There needed to be at least an outdoor sink with some soap that guests can use to properly wash hands after holding exotic animals before eating lunch. That is standard practice around the country, no matter what kind of aquarium, petting zoo, park, etc that you go to. I’m ok with a place being small, rugged, and not a huge fancy operation with government funding and major donors. But a sink with soap and water is not too much to ask for.
The animals were great. The location was sub par in my opinion. But the staff were terrible. I would not recommend this place based on the staff alone. Not to mention that it looked like there were a whopping 4 people managing the entire park, and if someone got hurt or had an emergency, I am concerned that staff would not have been able to handle it. Plus, it sounds like, by their own admission, that we would have just been laughed at since it’s not their job to care if someone gets hurt. What a disaster.
