点评:This is an amazing natural area with hundreds of lava tubes that you can explore. You have to have headlamps and hardhats (if you are exploring caves that require crawling–we chose to skip those ones). There are 27 caves with marked entrances and established paths and many more that are unmarked and unpathed. We chose six of the easier ones to do and they were amazing! We did Mushpot Cave, which is the only lit cave with a paved path the entire way. Next was Valentine Cave, which has glowing bacteria on the walls and ceilings, it was quite amazing with wide tubes to walk through. Quite a bit of ducking was required but no crawling. Next was Skull Cave–HUGE entrance and quite deep. Numerous stairways to go deeper and deeper until we finally ended up at the bottom where there was actually ice! The railings for the stairways were extremely cold.
Next was Big Painted Cave which required a .7 mile walk (in the extreme heat–over 90 degrees) to get to, but we wanted to do it because it promised petroglyphs. We couldn’t find any in the cave though so that was disappointing. We decided to go .18 miles further to another cave called Symbol Bridge which also promised petroglyphs and it had a lot! We felt our extra walk in the heat was worth it. Next was Merrill Ice Cave which used to have a completely iced over bottom that people used to have skating parties on. Over the years it has dissipated so there was no ice at the bottom, but it was still a cool cave. We were going to do a few more, but the heat had gotten to us and any cave that required more than a short walk we nixed. Back at the Visitors Center, we returned the flashlights we had borrowed and “purified” our shoes as instructed to avoid spreading a potential fungus that could kill bats at other caves. Would totally recommend this to anyone who enjoys caves.
